Two museums worth a visit

Frida's self portrait

Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting

High Museum of Art • Atlanta
Mexican husband and wife Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo became two of the most famous artists of the early 20th century, both for their extraordinary work and their outspoken participation in historic and political events. “Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting” examines the work of these artists and the context of their time.

The exhibition features more than 75 works by Kahlo and Rivera, many of which come from Mexican art museums. Themes explored include Mexican national pride, the 1910 Mexican Revolution and social commentary on the lives of common workers.

Visitors can see “Frida and Diego” now through May 12. The High Museum is the only museum in the United States to host this international touring exhibition.

Mitsitam Native Foods Café
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian • Washington
In the language of the native Delaware and Piscataway people, “Mitsitam” means “let’s eat.” It also makes an appropriate name for the restaurant at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, a fine museum highlighting America’s rich native history and traditions.

Mitsitam brings an interactive element to the museum experience by feeding visitors with indigenous cuisine from around the Americas. Upon entering the cafe, diners can choose dishes from each of five geographical areas. The Mesoamerica section, for example, features the cuisine of the “bean people,” and seafood takes center stage among the native foods of the Northwest Coast.

The restaurant offers cafeteria-style serving and open seating, making it an easy place for group travelers to dine at their own pace.
