Plans for Museum of the American Revolution revealed

PHILADELPHIA — In mid-June, the American Revolution Center unveiled the architectural design for the Museum of the American Revolution, which is scheduled to be built at the eastern end of Independence National Historical Park near Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

The museum will house the original artifacts, manuscripts, rare books and works of art owned by the American Revolution Center, the nonprofit educational organization that is building the museum and will tell the story of the American Revolution and explore its ongoing legacy.

Among the items in the center’s collection are George Washington’s sleeping and office tent and his silver camp cups; the earliest known surviving 13-star American flag and William Trego’s painting “The March to Valley Forge.”

The center has embarked on a $150 million capital campaign to raise funds to establish the museum. Philanthropist H.F. (Gerry) Lenfest has issued a $40 million challenge grant to encourage donations to the project. In addition to Lenfest’s challenge grant, the center has received a $30 million matching grant from the Commonwealth’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.
